Kaiser Natron, the almost-forgotten miracle substance, has countless uses both at home and in nature. Its versatility may surprise you.
Tips and Information
Kaiser Natron, or sodium bicarbonate, has been produced and sold in Germany for around 100 years. In the U.S. and among preppers, it’s better known as baking soda. Note that baking soda is not exactly the same as baking powder, which contains only a portion of sodium bicarbonate. Its use as a leavening agent is not covered here.
Because of its many practical applications, it’s a useful addition to your gear for longer trips and a popular prepper supply.
Hygiene
On longer camping trips in the mountains, forests, or on the water, hygiene shouldn’t be neglected! Kaiser Natron has antibacterial, cleansing, and refreshing properties that can be used in several ways.
Face Wash
For sensitive skin, Natron often works better than soap. Dissolve half a teaspoon of Natron powder in 0.5 liters of lukewarm water and use it to wash your face. Simply pat dry afterward — no need to rinse with water.
Deodorant
Rub a small amount under your arms to eliminate odor and prevent new odors from forming.
It also works well inside shoes. Sprinkle some Natron on the insole after a long hike and leave it for a few hours or overnight. Dump it out the next day — bacteria and odor are gone.
Toothpaste
Mix a little Natron with water until you reach the desired consistency. Add a few drops of mint oil for a refreshing flavor. The antibacterial and cleansing effects work even without mint. This improvised toothpaste also neutralizes acidic food residues between teeth, helping to prevent cavities.
Avoid Fabric Softeners
Hikers can wash socks with Natron — it’s antibacterial and contains no fabric softeners. Many commercial detergents and softeners leave residues that soften skin, which can increase the risk of blisters. Natron works as a gentle, effective laundry additive for all clothing.
Insect Bites
When bitten by insects, apply a paste made from Natron to reduce pain and swelling.
Medical Uses
Kaiser Natron is still used medically to balance acidity in the body. Dissolve one teaspoon in water and drink it. The alkaline properties help counteract over-acidity. For detailed advice, consult a doctor or pharmacist.
